Average response time: under 24 hours

A single-disc grinder (one rotating head, typically 250-460 mm) can grind, prep and polish small concrete floors up to 150 sqm, but it leaves swirl marks and takes 2-3x longer than a planetary. Use it for coating removal, light grinding, and edge blending with tooling like 6-segment cup wheels or trapezoid discs on a backing plate. Above 150 sqm, or if you need a mirror gloss, step up to a 3-head planetary - single-disc machines cannot remove their own cross-hatch without a very long resin sequence.
Single-disc machines are cheap, light, and maneuverable. They are the standard for rental yards, small residential jobs, garage floors, and edge work. They spin one disc at high RPM (1500-1800) and cut aggressively. The trade-off is surface quality - the disc rotates around a single axis and leaves a circular scratch pattern that only comes out at high resin grit.
Most single-disc grinders take a 250 mm or 300 mm diamond disc with 3-6 segments, or a Velcro-backed resin pad holder. Match the segment count to your concrete: more segments (6-10) cut smoother on hard concrete; fewer segments (3-4) cut faster on soft concrete. For a 250 mm disc, 4-segment metal-bond discs are the standard prep tool.
| Job | Tooling | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Coating removal | PCD cup/disc | Slow, steady |
| Coarse grind | 30/40 metal, 6 segments | Normal walk speed |
| Resin polish | 17-inch resin pads | Slow overlaps |
| Burnish | Wool/burnish pad | High speed |
Single-disc swirl marks come from the circular motion. To minimize them: make overlapping cross-passes (north-south, then east-west), never stay in one spot, and use a soft-bond metal disc so the scratch pattern is fine. After metal grinding, run 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 resin pads in cross-patterns. Even then, high-gloss floors from a single disc usually need a final burnish with a wool burnishing pad to kill the last of the swirl.
For edge work that the planetary cannot reach, finish with an angle grinder fitted with an L-segment cup wheel, then feather the blend so the edge matches the field.
A: Yes, to a honed or low-gloss finish. For a high-gloss mirror look, plan on extra resin grits and a final burnish pass.
Roughly 10-20 sqm per hour at 30/40 metal, 30-50 sqm per hour at resin polish. Planetary machines do 2-3x that.
You either walked too slowly, used a too-hard bond, or skipped grits. Cross-pattern passes and one-grit-at-a-time progression solves it.
A: Most commercial single-disc machines have a shroud and vacuum port. Always run Hepa extraction - single-disc grinding throws more dust than planetary.
Single-disc grinders are the right tool for small floors, coating removal and edge work - just plan for swirl marks and extra resin passes. Above 150 sqm or for mirror gloss, rent a planetary.
