Power-troweled concrete is dense, smooth and hard - the surface paste is troweled to a near-gloss. To grind it, start with a soft-bond metal disc at 30/40 grit such as Husqvarna bar-segment discs because hard bonds will glaze on the dense surface. Run dry with extraction, cross-hatch, and do not skip the 60/80 stage - the trowel sheen hides how much grinding is needed. Plan to remove 0.2-0.3 mm to reach fresh, grindable concrete.
A power trowel burns a dense cement-paste skin onto the slab. That skin is 2-3x harder than the concrete below, but also smoother. Diamond discs designed for rough concrete skate on top of the trowel sheen and glaze. You need an aggressive bond that bites, not one that slides.
On troweled floors, the bond rule flips: use soft bonds because the surface is hard. Hard-bond shoes skate on dense paste and glaze in minutes. Soft-bond trapezoid discs expose diamonds quickly and bite through the trowel skin. A HTC bar-segment disc in soft bond is the standard workhorse for troweled slabs.
| Trowel finish | Bond | Starting grit |
|---|---|---|
| Burnished / glossy | Soft | 30/40 |
| Satin | Medium-soft | 60/80 |
| Open / broomed | Medium | 100/120 |
Expect two extra passes compared to a broomed slab. The sequence: 30/40 soft bond (remove trowel sheen), 60/80 soft bond (open the surface), 120/150 medium bond (flatten), then ceramic transitional, then resin 50-3000. Do not skip 60/80 - it removes the scratches left by 30/40 and opens the pores for densifier.
For very dense burnished slabs, a 12-arrow-segment cup wheel on an angle grinder opens patches and edges that the walk-behind skate over.
A: No. The trowel skin is not porous and will not hold densifier. You must grind off 0.2 mm first to open fresh concrete.
The floor turns uniform matte gray, no longer reflects light, and exposes fine aggregate. Wet a test patch - if it darkens evenly, you are through.
Wrong bond. On dense troweled concrete you need soft bonds. Hard bonds skate and glaze. Switch.
Dry with extraction. Wet grinding on dense paste creates a slurry that clogs bonds and hides the scratch pattern.
Power-troweled floors need soft bonds and an extra 60/80 pass to break through the dense paste skin. Start at 30/40 soft, cross-hatch, and check for matte gray before moving up.
