The resin bond holds diamonds; as the diamonds wear, the bond exposes new ones. On hard concrete, the bond wears too fast and diamonds fall out early. On soft concrete, the bond loads up and glazes. Pad life is a balance.

Do not wait for pads to stop completely. Watch for these signs: the floor stops getting smoother at the end of a pass, the pad looks glossy and glazed (no fresh diamond visible), or you see consistent scratches across the floor. A worn pad is actually worse than no pad - it burnishes the surface without cutting and locks in old scratches.
A triangle-segment resin pad shows wear clearly: the triangles wear down and the diamond layer thins. Replace when the triangle height drops by half.
For wet polishing, 5-inch resin pads last longer than dry because water keeps the bond cool and prevents loading.
