A true high gloss finish on concrete normally needs 6 to 8 grit steps: coarse metal bond grinding (two or three steps), transitional pads (one or two steps), and resin polishing (three or four steps up to 1500-3000 grit). If you stop at 400 grit resin you get a matte finish; the gloss appears in the 800+ resin steps and builds further with 1500 and 3000 grit plus burnishing.
| Stage | Grit | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Grinding | 30/40, 60/80, 120 | Flatten slab, open surface, remove scratches |
| Transitional | 200, 400 | Metal-to-resin bridge, closes the surface |
| Resin polishing | 800, 1500, 3000 | Builds the glossy, reflective finish |
| Finish | Burnishing pad | Polishes and densifies for extra sheen |
Run each step with the right diamond resin polishing pads; a full 6-8 step set in one pad series keeps grit progression consistent.
Jumping from 120 grit metal straight to 800 resin leaves deep scratches that the resin cannot cut out — the finish looks grey and patchy. Each grit removes the scratches left by the previous one. Coarse steps grind the surface, transitional steps refine it, and resin steps polish it. The 5-inch resin polishing pad set covers the resin stages so you can keep one mounting system through the finish.
Plan one pad set per machine head per step for large floors. A 6-step program on a 1000 m² warehouse uses roughly one set of pads per step when pads are rotated; smaller areas can run multiple steps on one set. The diamond resin floor polishing pads are available in standard 3-inch and larger sizes to match your head.
A: Not reliably. Resin pads polish but do not flatten. Without the grinding and transitional steps the surface keeps its original profile and the gloss is uneven.
A: No. Many specifiers stop at 800 or 1500 grit for a commercial satin look. Mirror-glass reflection usually needs 1500 plus burnishing or 3000.
A:Roughly 8-15 minutes per m² with a planetary grinder, depending on concrete hardness, machine weight and pad condition.
Plan 6-8 steps for high gloss: grind coarse, bridge with transitional pads, then polish through resin grits and burnish. JOY TECH supplies complete resin pad programs; tell us your floor area and target finish and we will recommend the exact step set.
