Shallow scratches on polished concrete are removed by dropping back one resin grit and re-running the floor with fresh pads. A scratch from furniture or a cart that catches the light but does not catch a fingernail is 0.02-0.05 mm deep - remove it with a 800 grit resin pad such as white resin pad, then re-polish through 1500 and 3000. Deep scratches that catch a fingernail need metal-bond grinding and a full re-polish. Do not try to burnish out shallow scratches - that makes them worse.
Run a fingernail across the scratch. If it catches, the scratch is deeper than 0.1 mm and needs metal-bond grinding. If it does not catch, it is a surface scratch and resin pads will remove it in 1-2 passes.
Identify the finest grit that still shows the scratch. If the floor is 3000 grit and a scratch shows, drop back to 1500. If it still shows at 1500, drop to 800. Run two passes cross-hatched, then come back up through the grits. Use fresh pads - dirty pads cause more scratches than they remove.
| Scratch depth | Drop back to | Then finish |
|---|---|---|
| Hairline | 1500 resin | 3000, burnish |
| Shallow (no catch) | 800 resin | 1500, 3000 |
| Medium (slight catch) | 400 resin | 800, 1500, 3000 |
| Deep (firm catch) | 150 metal | Full resin sequence |
Soft, flexible resin pads cut shallow scratches without digging in. A 3-inch resin pad at 800 grit is the standard repair tool. Run dry with extraction, at low speed. After removing scratches, burnish with a burnishing pad to restore the mirror gloss. Never use a metal-bond disc on a polished floor for shallow scratches - that creates 10x more work.
For random fine scratches that appear after a clean, a dry sponge pad on a low-speed buffer removes the micro-scratches without dropping a grit.
A: No. Burnishing polishes the surface but does not cut. You must drop to a cutting resin grit first.
1-2 hours for a single shallow scratch on a small area, half a day for widespread scuffs across a room.
Polished concrete is a mirror; every 0.02 mm scratch reflects light. Honed concrete is diffuse and hides them.
Only for structural cracks. Surface scratches should be ground out and re-polished, not filled.
Shallow scratches drop back one resin grit, re-polish, burnish. Deep scratches that catch a fingernail need metal grinding. Fresh pads and cross-hatch passes do the repair. JOY TECH supplies resin pads for scratch repair; tell us the scratch depth for the right starting grit.
